America’s First Certified Organic Fast Food Chain

serveimage

By Carey Wedler
As fast food chains like Jack in the Box and McDonald’s fight to stay afloat, a new fast food chain is challenging fundamental norms within the industry. Organic Coup is the first USDA-certified organic fast food chain in the country, offering previously unheard of healthy options and boasting formidable funding with ambitious plans to expand rapidly across the country.

Touting its organic certification, Organic Coup explains its standards, which “do not allow Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), toxic chemicals and pesticides, or the use of antibiotics or added hormones in livestock.”

Their small but savory menu reflects their approach. The two locations currently open for business, both located in Northern California, serve crispy chicken sandwiches fried in organic coconut oil and topped with spicy organic vegetables on an organic bun. The chicken is provided by the popular organic brand, Mary’s Chicken and also comes in wrap and bowl form. Organic Coup offers a variety of organic sauces, as well as chicken tenders on the side.

For dessert, Organic Coup serves organic popcorn drizzled in organic chocolate and caramel (perhaps a more appealing option to health conscious consumers than McDonald’s recent addition of chocolate drizzled fries). They also plan to add organic tater tots and breakfast burritos to the menu.

Violence on the Factory Farm: How Not to Feed the World

serveimage
The amount of meat humans eat is immense. In 1965, 10 billion livestock animals were slaughtered each year. That number is now over 55 billion. Factory farming is the fastest growing method of animal production worldwide. While industrialised nations dominate this form of farming, developing countries are rapidly expanding and intensifying their production systems.

Violence on the farm

A new virtual reality film project by Animal Equality shows the public how a factory farm operates. The film focuses on how pigs live out their lives from birth to death – from the perspective of a pig. It is clear that it is not just the pig’s final death that is brutal but its whole life

The film shows how a factory farm pig is born in confinement (and into its mother’s excrement), its tail is docked and teeth clipped and it is castrated (if male) – all without pain relief. It is separated from its mother, which has been pinned down by a metal bar, and will never see the outdoors.

If the pig is female, ahead of it lies a life of artificial insemination and the taking of its children by humans over and over again, for as long as it remains fertile. Males will be taken to be fattened and will again live in overcrowded cages without stimulation, often leading to mental distress played out by biting other pigs in the cage, and fattened for five months until slaughter.

It is a life worse than that of the worst incarcerated prisoner, yet its only crime is to have been born. And immediately before having its throat cut, the pig can see its own fate as other pigs are hung up in front of it, struggling and bleeding.

Animal Equality is an International animal advocacy organisation that is dedicated to defending all animals through public education, campaigns and investigations. It works to create a more just and compassionate world for animals and is active in many countries. Its film does not go in for sensationalism. What we see appears to be an ordinary factory farm from where the public’s food increasingly derives.

The FDA just banned fluorine-based chemicals in food packaging because of their toxicity … but won’t ban fluoride in public water supplies

serveimage
In response to a petition filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Environmental Working Group (EWG), and other environmental groups, the FDA has announced that it will ban a variety of toxic food packaging chemicals and cancer-causing food flavoring chemicals – chemicals they had previously approved.

Specifically, the food packaging chemicals they’re banning are all perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which belong to a class of coating chemicals associated with causing cancers, neurological problems, hormone imbalances and other serious health problems. Items typically coated with PFCs include take-out food containers, non-stick cookware and pizza boxes.

So, why isn’t the FDA banning fluoride in public water supplies?
While this is certainly good news, their move still begs the question: if fluorine-based chemicals, “… no longer [show] a reasonable certainty of no harm …” then why isn’t the FDA interested in banning fluoride in public water supplies?

Seriously, just because many people have it in their heads that fluoride builds healthy teeth (cavity prevention), and that it’s not harmful (because the medical professionals say so, because ads say so, etc.), that doesn’t make it true.

Denmark opens 1st food waste supermarket

bb
Denmark is said to throw away huge amounts of food every year, but it has just taken a major step towards alleviating the problem. Its first social supermarket with surplus food is now open to customers.

Hundreds of people visited the new store since its grand opening that took place in Copenhagen on Monday. The new store, called WeFood, will be selling a variety of products that would otherwise end up in the trash because of damaged packaging or because they are past their expiry dates. The prices are 30 percent to 50 percent lower than those in regular shops.

Turkish man sues own wife for ‘swearing at President Erdogan’

A Turkish man has filed a legal complaint against his own wife for insulting country’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and turning off the TV during his speeches, local media report.

The 40-year-old truck driver, named only as Ali D. by the newspaper Yeni Safak, said that he warned his spouse on numerous occasions against offending the President.

However, the woman apparently ignored his words and kept swearing at Erdogan during his appearances on television, or changed the channel.

“I kept on warning her, saying why are you doing this? Our president is a good person and did good things for Turkey,” Ali told the daily.

The wife reportedly provoked legal action against herself by telling her husband to “record and lodge a complaint” if he dislikes her behavior so much.

Turmeric the wonder spice

serveimageU9ZPJU12
Turmeric has long been one of the most prized spices from the East, but its benefits extend far beyond the wonderful flavor and color it lends to many recipes. The health-promoting properties of turmeric have been known for millennia, but only recently has it been discovered that the bright orange spice is also a powerful ally in preventing and curing cancer.

It’s been cultivated for more than 5,000 years in the tropics of Asia, where the brown-skinned root with the bright-orange flesh has been valued for the treatment of a number of conditions including “toothache, chest pain, urinary tract infection, flatulence, jaundice, menstrual discomforts, bruises, hemorrhage, and colic.”

The spice made its way to the West through Arab trade routes during the 13th century and has become popular throughout the world. Turmeric is now grown in tropical regions such as India, the Philippines and the Caribbean, and is probably best known as one of the fundamental ingredients of curry dishes.

Real Goods Are The Real Money

serveimage

Certainly not gold or cash under the mattress.

Written by Tom Chatham.

We have seen the massive drop in the Baltic Dry Index over the past few months indicating shipping of bulk materials around the world is slowing down to unprecedented levels. We have seen the shutdown and mothballing of hundreds of locomotive engines in the U.S. just over the past few months indicating goods and raw materials are not being shipped in the normal volume as in years past.

We are seeing hundreds of stores run by major retailers being shut down around the country indicating people are not buying goods at the same rate as in years past. Most of our manufacturing ability has been shipped overseas to lower input costs. It has been reported that as many as 15% of the farmers in the U.S. will go out of business this year.

This all means two things. People no longer have the means to buy at will and the amount of goods available will continue to fall until there are severe shortages in the system. The lack of production and distribution will insure that the standard of living of most Americans will drop in the coming months as supply is outstripped by demand in a collapsing economy. As indicated above, the collapse is not coming soon, it is here now.

Real goods trump money of any kind when it comes to everyday living. If you have a years worth of goods stored in your home or the ability to produce them locally, it does not matter if you have a million dollars or no money at all. It does not matter if the store shelves are full or empty. It does not matter if goods are being produced and transported. If you have access to those goods you have what you actually need and not paper promises to get them at some future date for an unspecified amount.

Glyphosate causing a wave of chronic disease across America

serveimage
A recent study conducted by Dr. Nancy Swanson and the President of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), Andre Leu, has reinforced what many have been convinced of all along: glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup, is lethal. Their correlation study determined that it’s lethal even in small amounts, debunking the notion in which some people suggest that its levels are so low that it can’t possibly damage health.

The study, titled “Genetically engineered crops, glyphosate and the deterioration of health in the United States of America,” was published in the Journal of Organic Systems. First, United States government databases were reviewed to find GE crop data, disease epidemiological data and glyphosate application data. Then, the team conducted correlation analyses on 22 diseases in these data sets which revealed the disturbing discovery that the ingredient is indeed wreaking havoc on people’s health.

Are you being poisoned by your Teflon pan?

serveimage
Did you know that nonstick cookware is made with highly reactive and toxic fluoride chemicals that can turn to toxic gas at everyday cooking temperatures?

Although numerous chemicals are used to produce nonstick coatings, all of them are in the family known a perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs). These toxins have been linked to a wide array of health problems, including thyroid dysfunction, lowered infant birth weight, liver inflammation, high cholesterol and weakened immune function. They build up in the body and are nearly impossible to flush out or destroy. They have been found in the bodies of nearly every U.S. resident tested.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), PFCs – including those released by your Teflon cookware – exhibit “persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity properties to an extraordinary degree.”

Perhaps the worst part of the fact that so many people are poisoning themselves for the supposed convenience of nonstick pans, is that it’s completely unnecessary. You can get the same convenience from a cast-iron pan, and it will actually improve your health rather than worsening it.

Heating Your Food With Microwave Radiation a bad Idea

55
A few decades from now, will it be common knowledge that using microwave radiation to heat food is harmful to human health? It’s certainly a possibility, and information is already emerging which shows cause for concern.

Microwaves work by causing water molecules to resonate at very high frequencies, converting them into steam and thereby heating your food. While this might be a convenient way to prepare your food, using microwave radiation in this way actually changes the chemical structure of that food.

The fact that they are approved as safe doesn’t mean much these days, as we’ve seen with several other examples from Tobacco, PCBs and Asbestos and Glyphosate. Just because a government agency, like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or a government health agency approves something as safe, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe.

It is starting to look like microwaving can completely rid your food of most essential nutrients, but more research on this phenomenon needs to be done. That being said, there are some publications we can refer to if you’d like to find out more information regarding the harmful effects of microwaves on nutrients.

One example comes from 2003. A study published in The Journal of the Science of Food and Agricultureexamined what microwaves do to broccoli, finding that broccoli, after being microwaved, lost up to 97 percent of its beneficial antioxidants. By comparison, when researchers steamed broccoli, they discovered that it only lost 11 percent or fewer of its antioxidants.

Food Irradiation: Why It is Harmful to Your Health and Energy

serveimage

Food irradiation, also known as “cold pasteurization” or “irradiation pasteurization,” is a food sterilization technology that has been around for nearly a century. Food irradiation is done by exposing food to ionizing radiation, which according to the EPA, “kills bacteria and other pathogens, that could otherwise result in spoilage or food poisoning.”

The good things about using ionizing radiation to sterilize food are that it may increase the shelf life of the food, and can destroy most harmful microorganisms and insects. The bad things are that it can change the natural structures of the food and destroy many of its nutrients, making it unhealthy and even harmful to eat. As a result, your health will suffer which often leads to a lack of energy and even chronic fatigue.

Its all about profit from long shelf life. But also more profit would be made by pharmaceutical companies treating people who are more sick from bad nutrition. Irradiating food will destroy most of the nutrition in your food.

Chocolate might be the healthiest indulgence ever

Broken-Bar-Dark-Chocolate

You might not intuitively think so, but chocolate is very rich in minerals. A standard 100 gram dark chocolate bar contains 98 percent of a person’s recommended daily value of manganese, 89 percent DV of copper, 67 percent DV of iron, 58 percent DV of Magnesium, 31 percent DV of phosphorous, 22 percent DV of Zinc, 21 percent DV of potassium, and 10 percent DV of selenium. We literally cannot survive without these minerals, and unfortunately many of us who live in modern civilizations are not getting the recommended amount through our diet.

Made up of more than just minerals, chocolate also contains the health-promoting compounds caffeine, theobromine, resveratrol, epicatechin, anandamide, tryptophan, phenylethylamine and polyphenol. These compounds are known to increase energy, focus, and positive feelings. The antioxidant content of chocolate is mindboggling too. Chocolate has the highest ORAC score, which is used to measure the antioxidant content of foods, of any commonly eaten whole food. It is estimated to have an ORAC of about 55,000, which is nearly three times that of blackberries, the highest fruit on the list. Antioxidants have been shown to reduce damage to cells and potentially contribute to the prevention of major diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
