150,000 Russian troops on alert, causes alarm in Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin put Russian combat troops on high alert for war games near Ukraine yesterday, the Kremlin’s boldest gesture yet after days of saber rattling since its ally Viktor Yanukovich was toppled as president in Kiev. Moscow said about 150,000 troops would take part in exercises in the Western military district that borders Ukraine, although it denied that the previously unannounced war games were linked to events in its neighbor. Thousands of ethnic Russians, who form the majority in Ukraine’s Crimea region, demonstrated for independence. They scuffled with rival demonstrators supporting the new Kiev authorities. The Crimea is home to part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which Moscow said it was taking steps to secure.

Central Banker Appointed as Prime Minister of Ukraine

A reshuffled Ukrainian Parliament installed following a coup last week has voted to appoint Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the new prime minister of the country. Yats, as Victoria Nuland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. State Department, called him, is a natural choice. He is a millionaire former banker who served as economy minister, foreign minister and parliamentary speaker before Yanukovych took office in 2010. He is a member of Yulie Tymoshenko’s Fatherland Party. Prior to the revolution cooked up by the State Department and executed by ultra-nationalist street thugs, Tymoshenko was incarcerated for embezzlement and other crimes against the people of Ukraine. Now she will be part of the installed government, same as she was after the last orchestrated coup, the Orange Revolution.

Issuing the IMF’s first official response to the crisis, managing director Christine Lagarde said IMF officials would be dispatched to Ukraine to, “start discussing with the Ukrainian authorities which policy reforms would be required in exchange for an emergency loan program.

  1. If the major powers in this situation (US and Russia) allow the balkanization of the Ukraine, splitting it along ethnic/cultural lines, peace will actually be quite easy and natural. The problem comes from giving one half of the local population the false hope of dominating the other half, by promising to “back them up”. As both the major powers have done.
