What links the death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Afghanistan and the war on terror?

Marines in Poppies

Tony Blair says, “90% of heroin sold in UK originates from Afghanistan.” Tansy Hoskins asks: “Whose fault is that?”

The death of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman has focused the media’s lens on heroin use. News packages have documented the drug’s rise in the US and the UK – speaking to distraught families and decrying the fact that heroin is now plaguing the middle classes. One key link in the chain is, however, largely being ignored – that of Britain and the United States’ bloody and failed ‘War on Terror’.

Consider this: since the 2001 invasion and occupation by NATO forces, production of opium in Afghanistan has risen by 1,400 per cent. With Afghanistan being the source of ninety per cent of the heroin in Britain, chickens – carrying poppies in their beaks – have come home to roost.
